Nominations were reviewed against the outlined criteria, and the top 20 volunteer fire departments were selected and voted on by the public. People were allowed to submit one vote per category each day between May 20 and June 20, 2014.Announcement and Prizing
On June 24, 2014, Johnsonville announced the top 10 Best of US winners based on the public vote. The grand prize-winning department received $10,000 in cash, plus a prize pack from IFSTA that includes an IFSTA Training Library and home smoke alarm equipment with alert devices for 100 homes in the community. The equipment comes with training to help the department makes its community more fire safe.
The remaining nine Best of US winners received $1,000 to use toward their firehouse or community. All 10 winners will receive the latest industry textbooks, apparel and hats from IFSTA and Johnsonville sausage products for the fire department to raise additional funds.
