Atlantic Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company

Atlantic, VA
The Atlantic Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company was established 57 years ago in the small farming town of Atlantic, Virginia. Today the prime industry in the surrounding area is still agriculture, poultry farming and aquaculture with defense contractors for the U.S. Navy and NASA providing additional employment. The town is a close-knit community with the fire company in the center. The firehouse is used as a meeting place for community meetings and safe boating classes taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Atlantic Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co. responds to more than 350 calls per year. They pride themselves with a very quick response time and a large member turnout for emergency calls day or night. With current equipment on all the apparatus, the company can handle most emergencies. Their Rescue Truck is often requested by Virginia State Fire Instructors for vehicle extrication classes taught in the county because of the equipment on board. The company just received a new water tanker, replacing a tanker that has been in service since 1978. The fire company is the leader in the county for fire prevention education. The company takes its fire prevention "Smoke House" trailer to approximately 30 events per year at local schools, community events throughout Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia. The trailer even travels to Maryland, well outside of their fire district. The members bring the community together with two big annual functions, “Breakfast with Santa” and “Breakfast with the Easter Bunny.” With support from a neighboring police department, the company was able to provide Christmas gifts to 85 families in 2013. They also provided transportation to Santa throughout the local community, a highlight to local children. Members take pride in the contributions they make to the community. They are always willing to lend a helping hand in their community and neighboring communities, placing countless hours in emergency responses and training. The men and women of the Atlantic Volunteer Fire & Rescue are the BEST of US.
