2. CONTEST PERIOD: The Johnsonville Best of US Campaign (“Contest”) begins April 8, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Saving Time (“EDT”), and ends June 24, 2014. The Contest will take place in three phases: (1) the Entry Period which begins April 8, 2014 at 12:01 a.m. EDT and ends May 7, 2014at 11:59 p.m. EDT; (2) the Finalist Selection Period which will take place between May 8, 2014and May 19, 2014EDT; and (3) the Voting Period which will begin on May 20, 2014at 12:01 a.m. EDT and ends June 20, 2014at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

3. SPONSOR:  The Contest is sponsored by Johnsonville Sausage, LLC, N6928 Johnsonville Way, Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085. (“Sponsor”).

4. ADMINISTRATOR: The Contest is administered by GolinHarris, 875 N. Michigan Avenue, 27th Floor, Chicago, IL 60611 (“Administrator”).

5. ELIGIBILITY: Legal residents of the 50 United States, and the District of Columbia, who are 18 years of age (or the age of majority in their state) or older are eligible to enter, except employees of Sponsor, Administrator, and any other organizations affiliated with the sponsorship, fulfillment, administration, prize support, advertisement or promotion and/or their respective agents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and members of their immediate families or persons residing at the same address.

6. ENTRY: Enter the Contest by visiting (the “Website”) and clicking the links for the official entry form. Entry must include an essay in up to 500 words describing how a volunteer fire department (the “Nominee”) represents the “Best of US.” Entrants may also submit photographs in support of the entry; limit five per entry. While all photos will be accepted, high-resolution photos taken with at least a four mega pixel camera are preferred. Entries must also include your name, your address, a valid email address, and your Nominee’s fire department name, location, phone number and/or email address (“Entry Materials”).

Entries may be submitted by (a) a community members or (b) fire departments.

A. Volunteer Fire Department: When nominating a Volunteer Fire Department, the Volunteer Fire Department must meet all of the following criteria:

The department must be considered a “volunteer fire department” as defined by the National Fire Protection Association:

Volunteer Fire Department: A fire department having volunteer emergency service personnel comprising 85 percent or greater of its department members 1

Volunteer fire department must be operational as of April 7, 2014 and serve residents in communities within the United States.

Fire department must serve a community or communities with a population of at least 100.

As found in the NFPA® 1720 – Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operation, and Special Operations to the Public by Volunteer Fire Departments (

Entries (i) must be the original and sole creation of the submitting entrant, and all right, title and interest including but not limited to the copyright in any Entry, must be owned solely by the submitting entrant; (ii) may not have been submitted in any other competition, (iii) may not have been published; (iv) may not infringe upon any third party's rights, including but not limited to, copyright, patent or trademark, or rights of privacy or publicity, or contain material that is or may be considered defamatory, slanderous or libelous, or portray or depict any person, product or entity in a false light; (v) may not violate any law, rule or regulation; (vi) may not contain any virus, bugs, or other deleterious material; and (vii) may not contain inappropriate content, for example but not limited to, profanity, defamatory statements, words or symbols widely considered offensive to individuals of any certain race, ethnicity, religious, sexual orientation or socioeconomic groups, threats to any person, place, business, or group. Each entrant warrants and represents that his/her Entry complies with all of those conditions. Any non-complying Entry will subject the entrant to disqualification in Johnsonville’s sole discretion.

7. ODDS: As this is a contest of skill, winning is dependent upon the quality of entries received and the skill of the individual entrants.

8. FINALIST SELECTION: On or about May 8, 2014, a qualified panel of judges will judge eligible entries on the basis of the following criteria:

Judging criteria: Once eligible, nominations for the Best of US volunteer fire department category will be scored based on the department’s ability to:

Serve and protect the community in which they operate (25%)

Promote fire safety to the surrounding area (25%)

Represent the values of their local area and America (25%)

Embody the spirit of teamwork, volunteerism and community service (25%)

Each entry will then be awarded a score from 0 (poor) to 100 (perfect) in each category. Administrator will weight and tally all of the scores for each entry and then rank them according to cumulative score. Twenty (20) Potential Finalists will be selected based on these rankings. The Potential Finalist will be the Nominee, not the nominator. In the event multiple entries nominating a single Nominee receive scores in the top 20, only the highest scoring entry will be deemed a Potential Finalist. All other entries nominating the Nominee will be discarded and the next highest scoring entry will be deemed a Potential Finalist and will move on to the Voting Round. In the event of a tie, the Potential Finalist will be the entry among the tied entries with the higher score in the criterion of Relevance to Subject Matter. Decisions of judges are final and binding in all respects. Sponsor and Administrator reserve the right to select fewer finalists if the quality or quantity of eligible entries is insufficient.

The 20 potential finalists will be voted on by the public with the top 10 potential finalists earning a prize.

The top 10 potential Finalists will be notified by phone or email (in the sole discretion of Sponsor or Administrator, as applicable) within the two days following the date of the judging (the “Prize Notification”). Potential Finalist may be required to execute, have notarized and return an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability and, unless prohibited by law, publicity, within seventy-two (72) hours of the time of issuance. Failure to submit any identification required by Sponsor/Administrator or to return any required documents within the specified time period, non-compliance with these Official Rules or the return of the prize or Prize Notification as undeliverable may result in disqualification and prize forfeiture. If the event a Potential Finalist is disqualified, the next highest scoring entry will be deemed a Potential Finalist.


One Grand Prize Winner will be selected during the Voting Period through public voting on the Website. The public will be asked to judge and vote on the Nominee who best represents “The Best of US.” The Finalist with the highest number of valid public votes will be deemed the Grand Prize Winner (subject to verification). In the event of a tie, the winner will be the entry among the tied Finalists with the higher score in the criterion of “Represent the Values of Their Local Area and America” from in the Finalist Selection Period. In the event of a further tie, that tie will be broken based on the highest score for “Embody The Spirit of Teamwork, Volunteerism And Community Service” in the Finalist Selection Period. In the event a potential winner is disqualified, the nominated fire department shall forfeit its prize and the Finalist with the next highest ranking will be selected as a the Grand Prize Winner. Being named a winner is subject to validation and verification of eligibility and compliance with all terms and conditions set forth in these Official Rules.

Voting is limited to one (1) vote per person/authorized e-mail account holder per day during the Voting Period. Offers to pay for votes or offers of like-kind exchanges are NOT permissible. Use of third-party websites, online social networking tools, or similar devices primarily designed or intended to generate or trade votes, as determined in Sponsor and Administrator’s sole discretion, is expressly prohibited. Use of personal social media accounts, blogs and websites to direct participants to voting site is permissible. Sponsor and Administrator reserve the right to disqualify any votes which do not comply with these Official Rules.


A. One (1) Grand Prize: The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded $10,000, and Johnsonville sausage products for the fire department to raise additional funds. The International Fire Safety Training Association (IFSTA) will provide the grand prize winner with an IFSTA Training Library and home smoke alarm equipment with alert devices (that meet the needs of people with disabilities) to install in 100 homes in their community. Each fire department member will receive a ball cap, a t-shirt, and an IFSTA eBook. IFSTA will also provide up-to-date smoke alarm installer training for the department to help their community become more fire safe. The Grand Prize will be awarded to the Nominee, not the entrant. The Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of all Grand Prizes is $25,350.

B. Nine (9) Finalist Prizes: Each Finalist that does not win the Grand Prize will be awarded $1,000, and $350 of Johnsonville sausage products for the fire department to raise additional funds. IFSTA will also award each fire finalist fire department a ball cap, a t-shirt and an IFSTA eBook. The Finalist Prize will be awarded to the Nominee, not the entrant. The ARV of all Finalist Prizes is $13,050.

ARV of all prizes is $38,400.

One prize per Nominee. Sponsor and Administrator reserve the right to substitute a prize (or portions thereof) of equal or greater value if prize (or portions thereof) cannot be awarded as described. Sponsor will determine all elements of prizes in its sole discretion. All prizes will be awarded, unless there are fewer entries than prizes. Prizes may not be assigned, transferred, changed or redeemed for cash, except at the sole discretion of Sponsor.


The awarding of any prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Official Rules. Entrants agree to be bound by Official Rules and agree that if any Entrant or his/her Nominee fails to provide proof of identity, refuses to provide required affidavit, is found to have violated the Official Rules or otherwise does not meet eligibility criteria, both the Entrant and the Nominee’s prize will be forfeited and awarded to the entry with the next highest score. Entrants understand that Sponsor and Administrator are not liable for injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from participation in this promotion and acceptance, possession and use of prize. Sponsor and Administrator are not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the contest or in the announcement of the prize. Decisions of Sponsor and Administrator are final and binding in all respects.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION. Except where prohibited, by participating Contest entrants agree that:  All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrant(s) and Sponsor and its agents shall be governed by and construed exclusively in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin without giving effect to any principles of conflicts of law of any jurisdiction.  Entrant agrees that any action at law or in equity arising out of or relating to this Contest, or awarding of the prizes, shall be filed only in the state or federal courts located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and entrant hereby consents and submits to the personal jurisdiction of such courts for the purposes of litigating any such action. Except where prohibited, by participating in this Contest, each entrant agrees that:  (a) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or awarding of the prizes, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; and (b) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with participating in this Contest but in no event attorneys' fees; and (c) under no circumstances will any  entrant be permitted to obtain awards for and hereby waives all rights to claim  punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or  otherwise increased. Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitations or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above may not apply to you.      

OTHER. Sponsor and Administrator reserve the right to disqualify any non-conforming entries.  Sponsor and Administrator further reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to cancel, terminate or modify this promotion if not capable of completion as planned, including infection by computer virus, technical corruption, non-authorized human intervention or force majeure. In the event of cancellation, Sponsor and Administrator reserve the right to select winners from among all eligible entries received prior to date of cancellation. The use of automated entry systems or any other conduct that impedes the integrity of the contest is prohibited.  In the event of a dispute regarding online entry, entry will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of an established e-mail account associated with the entry. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet Access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address.

Sponsor and Administrator assume no responsibility for entries they are unable to process due to network, hardware or other technical failures, or any other reason, or incomplete, damaged, misdirected, illegible, stolen or lost entries.  Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion to disqualify any person tampering with the entry process, the operation of the web site or otherwise, in violation of the rules. CAUTION:  Any attempt by an entrant or any other individual to deliberately damage any web site or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such individual to the fullest extent permitted by law.

GENERAL RELEASE. By entering the Contest and/or accepting any Prize, each entrant releases the Sponsor, Administrator, and their respective affiliates and related companies and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and other representatives from any liability whatsoever for any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the Contest, with the acceptance, possession or use of any Prize (including without limitation, claims, costs, injuries or losses related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light) subject to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

GENERAL. Except where prohibited by law: (i) entry constitutes permission and a license to use entrant’s submission on Sponsor’s web sites including Sponsor’s third party social media websites; and (ii) entry constitutes permission to use winning fire department’s name, location, volunteers, voice, likeness, photograph and any statements regarding this contest for editorial, public relations, promotional and advertising purposes on behalf of Sponsor without compensation. Void where prohibited. Winning fire department’s name will be posted on Website on or after June 24, 2014.
